Experience

My specialties are health care business and policy (especially health information technology and measuring the quality of care), medical research, pharmaceuticals, bio- and nanotechnology, and the Internet and electronic commerce. My freelance career has included ongoing relationships with several publications:

Current. Developmental editor, NEJM Catalyst, a project of the New England Journal of Medicine that focuses on solutions to the challenges that face our health care system. I work with experts to revise their contributions to the site to conform to its style and address its central mission. These revisions can range from a light edit to a full rewrite. I also edit scholarly articles on artificial intelligence for another NEJM journal, NEJM AI.

2009-2016. Contributing editor, Health Data Management magazine/website. Wrote features and profiles on the lively and rapidly evolving field of electronic health records and clinical computing. Three of my stories for Health Data Management were finalists for Jesse H. Neal Awards from the American Business Media Assn.

2002-2008.  Correspondent, Small Times magazine and Web site, published by Small Times Media/PennWell Corp. Wrote news and features on the micro- and nanotechnology industries.

1995-2001. Contributing Writer, Internet World, published by Mecklermedia and later by Penton Media. Wrote breaking news, features and analysis on electronic commerce, advertising and marketing, Web design, and legal issues. Handled in-house surveys of Web design firms, Fortune 500 Webmasters, and Internet company CEOs.

1994-1995. Contributing Editor, Internet Business Report, published by CMP Publications. Wrote analytical features on many aspects of the developing commercial Internet, including encryption, digital cash, online stock brokerages, and firewall technology.

Book: I co-authored Advanced Introduction to Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, published in 2022 by Edward Elgar Publishing.

1987-1993. Reporter, Modern Healthcare, weekly news magazine for the healthcare industry published by Crain Communications, Chicago. Wrote monthly columns and several cover stories annually on information technology as it pertains to healthcare delivery and administration. Other beats included quality measurement and management, and hospital design and construction.

I am a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists and the National Association of Science Writers.

Education

M.S., Columbia University, New York, in journalism, with concentration in radio and business reporting. While in school, worked part-time for the New York Daily News as a graphics researcher, and for Crain’s New York Business compiling data for business lists.

B.A., Brown University, Providence, R.I., in English, with emphasis on language structure and writing.
